Benefits of green tea for the eyes
It is well documented that green tea offers many health benefits. There were questions as to whether the consumption of the drink looks rich in antioxidants an increased benefit to the health of the eyes.
The most important cause of eye problems is stress, whether internal or external. Stress causes oxidation, which can produce a chemical reaction, the free radicals. Free radicals start damaging chain reactions, the cells.
An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Antioxidants have the ability to terminate, chain reactions and inhibit other oxidation reactions oxidized themselves. Polyphenols, antioxidants that act often as a reducing agent, are reducing the number of free radicals that can cause damage to healthy cells. A catechin is a compound from the family of polyphenols. An essential component of green tea is epigallocatechin gallate, a catechin called (such as the PEPA-gallate stem-CAT-related), commonly known as EGCG pronounced. EGCG is found in abundance in tea easily oxidized such as green tea and white tea.
A study conducted in 2002 by the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences has found that green tea can protect against cataract in the rat.
A cataract is a clouding that develops in the lens of the eye or in the envelope. The haze can in degrees from mild to opacity that causes a complete obstruction vary in the passage of light complete. Cataracts typically progress slowly to vision loss and are potentially blinding if untreated. The disease usually affects both eyes, but almost always one eye is affected earlier than the others.
I quote the study: "Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. It is a multifactorial disease associated mainly produces with oxidative stress caused by free radicals. The protection by antioxidants offered in various configurations cataract is well established. Polyphenols in green tea (Camellia sinensis) reported that antioxidant properties to own in various stages of the disease. This study is the potential of assessing green anticataract tea leaf (GTL) in the development of contrast extract lens. Green tea has also been found at the incidence of to reduce selenite cataract in vivo. The results suggest that green tea has great potential anticataract acts primarily by preserving the antioxidant defense system.
A 2006 study by the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom found that EGCG can against macular degeneration and glaucoma associated with age to protect.
The cell culture study has examined whether the antioxidant EGCG could reduce damage by free radicals and by the degeneration of the retina, which occurs in macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma. The study said: "EGCG was about 10 times stronger than mitigate Trolox (vitamin E analogue) [free] radical damage. The conclusion of this study is that EGCG is a powerful antioxidant and as an injection into the eye with SNP attenuated the effect of SNP night photoreceptors in the retina. has since oxidative stress placed on retinal diseases like AMD and glaucoma in combination, this study provides "proof of principle" on the idea that, the daily intake of EGCG to help people with diseases of the retina, where oxidant stress is involved. "
In a 2007 survey by Chosun University College of Medicine researchers conducted study has found that EGCG from green tea antioxidant Korean, the retina of the people against UV rays to protect. The investigator's report concluded: "The administration of EGCG increased the cell number and activity of cells after UV irradiation in cultured retinal pigment epithelial cells of human, suggesting that EGCG protects against ultraviolet radiation in cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cells.
More recently, in 2010 conducted a study of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, it has been shown that antioxidants can be found in the eyes of more than 20 hours after they were consumed. Scientists have shown that absorb the lens, retina and other eye tissues of these protective substances, as the possibility that green tea may protect against glaucoma and other common eye diseases. One of the questions were asked whether the catechins in green tea passed from the stomach and digestive tract into the tissue of the eye. The analysis of eye tissues in laboratory rats that drank green tea, showed beyond doubt that the structure of the eye absorbs large quantities of the individual catechins. The report concludes: "Our results suggest that consumption of green tea were able to benefit from the eye from oxidative stress.
Although all the above mentioned studies are preliminary and contain no human studies, they strongly suggest that EGCG is found in abundance in green tea, the eyes of the following benefits
* By preventing the formation of cataracts
* By protecting against macular degeneration and glaucoma associated with age
* By protecting the retina from damage caused by ultraviolet radiation
* By protecting the retina, lens and aqueous humor from damage by free radicals caused by oxidative stress
